Calculate your BMI
For adults 20 and older. For younger people, use the CDC child and teen calculator. During pregnancy, or if you have or suspect an eating disorder, ask a clinician for an individual assessment instead.

The number is rounded to one decimal; categories and thresholds use the unrounded value. This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis or prescription decision.

One number, part of the picture
BMI relates weight to height. It cannot separate muscle from fat or measure where fat is stored. Blood pressure, blood sugar, waist size, health history, and your goals matter too.
Your BMI is a starting point for a conversation—not a score of your worth or a complete picture of your health.
See the adult BMI rangesWhat does my BMI mean?
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 to less than 25 | Healthy weight range |
| 25 to less than 30 | Overweight |
| 30 to less than 35 | Obesity, class 1 |
| 35 to less than 40 | Obesity, class 2 |
| 40 or higher | Obesity, class 3 |
Risk can differ at the same BMI. Some ethnic backgrounds are associated with metabolic risk at lower BMI levels, and a muscular person may have a higher BMI without excess body fat. A clinician interprets the result in context.
Could a GLP-1-based weight-loss medicine be right for you?
For adults, medication evaluation commonly starts at BMI 30 or higher, or BMI 27 or higher with at least one weight-related health condition. Meeting a BMI threshold does not establish eligibility. These medicines support a reduced-calorie eating plan and physical activity; a clinician reviews benefits, risks, medical history, and current medications.
These are FDA-approved weight-management options to discuss, not a recommendation to start one. Availability, insurance coverage, and YourMD prescribing options are confirmed during care.

Important safety considerations
These medicines have boxed warnings about thyroid C-cell tumors and must not be used with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Weight-loss treatment is not appropriate during pregnancy. Discuss pregnancy plans and breastfeeding with your clinician.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation can occur. Serious risks can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, dehydration-related kidney injury, and severe allergic reactions. Tell your clinician about severe stomach-emptying problems, diabetes medicines, and planned anesthesia. Do not combine GLP-1 medicines or change an existing treatment based on this page. Read each product’s full safety information.
Other treatments may fit your needs better. Your clinician may recommend nutrition and activity support, another medication class, or specialist evaluation.

BMI calculator questions
How is BMI calculated?
Divide weight in kilograms by height in meters squared: BMI = kg ÷ m². For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m gives a BMI of about 22.9. With pounds and total inches, multiply pounds by approximately 703 and divide by inches squared. This calculator uses exact unit conversions before rounding.
Does my BMI tell me which medicine to take?
No. It cannot assess contraindications, interactions, pregnancy, weight-related conditions, or treatment history. YourMD’s existing intake asks about these factors before a clinician reviews your options. The calculator does not select a drug or dose.
Can I use this if I am 18 or 19?
The CDC adult categories used here start at age 20. For ages 2–19, use the CDC child and teen calculator, which interprets BMI using age and sex. A clinician can help you understand the result.
Will my information be saved or emailed?
No. Calculation happens in your browser, without sending your measurements or result to YourMD, saving them in browser storage, or adding them to a link. If you choose to start care, enter and confirm your information in the secure intake.
What if my BMI is below 27?
This is below the usual starting threshold for weight-management medication. You can still discuss nutrition or health concerns with a clinician. A lower current BMI does not tell someone already receiving treatment to stop it.
