Medication use
Starting Varenicline: Match the Tablets to Your Quit Plan
Varenicline treatment includes a medication schedule and a smoking-cessation plan. Starting packs may contain different tablet strengths for different days. Read the pack with your pharmacist so you know what happens next rather than treating all tablets as interchangeable.
What to do next
- Follow the prescribed starting schedule and quit-date strategy. Do not invent a faster increase.
- Take doses after food with a full glass of water as directed. Ask for help if nausea interferes with treatment.
- Tell the prescriber about kidney problems, other medicines, and alcohol use.
- Track cravings, smoking, sleep changes, and side effects for follow-up.
When to contact your care team
Stop the medicine and contact a clinician immediately for concerning mood or behavior changes, suicidal thoughts, or sleepwalking. Seizures or serious allergic reactions need urgent care. Avoid driving until you know how treatment affects you, and review the complete medication information.
Put it into practice
If the tablets in the box do not match the written schedule, call the pharmacy before guessing. Keep a simple day-by-day checklist during the starter period. A missed day or a cigarette after the quit date is information to discuss, not a reason to take extra tablets.
