Tadalafil: Confirm Your Schedule Before Using It

Tadalafil may be prescribed on a daily or as-needed schedule. These are different plans, and tablets should not be combined simply because they contain the same medicine. Before using a refill, confirm that the schedule still matches your current prescription.

What to do next

  1. Read whether your prescription is daily or as needed and follow that schedule exactly. Do not add an extra dose before sex to a daily plan.
  2. Do not combine tadalafil with sildenafil or another ED medicine unless your prescriber explicitly directs it.
  3. Do not use tadalafil with nitrates, recreational nitrites, or riociguat. Ask about interactions with blood-pressure drugs and other medicines.
  4. Discuss alcohol use; larger amounts can increase dizziness and low-blood-pressure effects.

When to contact your care team

An erection lasting more than four hours or sudden vision or hearing loss needs urgent care. Call 911 for chest pain, fainting, or severe breathing difficulty and tell responders when you last took tadalafil. Do not self-treat chest pain with nitrates after taking it.

Put it into practice

If you have both an old and a new bottle, ask the pharmacist which one reflects the active plan and how to dispose of the other. Do not use the number of tablets remaining as a guide to how frequently you should take the medicine.
