Your Tretinoin Routine: Keep It Simple and Follow the Label

A tretinoin routine should be easy to repeat and gentle enough to tolerate. This guide concerns topical tretinoin, not oral tretinoin. The strength, formulation, and frequency prescribed for you determine the routine; an online example should not replace those directions.

What to do next

  1. Clean the skin gently and let it dry as your product instructions direct before applying.
  2. Use the prescribed amount on the intended area. Avoid eyes, lips, and other sensitive surfaces. More product can increase irritation.
  3. Review other acne treatments, exfoliants, and irritating skin products with your clinician before combining them.
  4. Use sun protection and discuss moisturizers that fit your routine.

When to contact your care team

Discuss pregnancy, pregnancy plans, or breastfeeding before use. Contact the prescriber for substantial irritation, blistering, swelling, or worsening skin symptoms; do not assume every reaction is a normal “purge.” Seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Put it into practice

Write the routine as a short sequence you can follow at night. If your skin becomes uncomfortable, record when it started and what else you applied. Ask for specific changes rather than repeatedly stopping and restarting different products without a plan.

Notes for your next visit

Write these in your own notes or on a printed copy. Bring them to your follow-up.
