Finasteride Tablets: Handling, Missed Doses, and Follow-Up
Finasteride treatment for hair loss requires a consistent plan and time to assess response. Before starting, know the strength prescribed and the follow-up schedule. Hair-loss and prostate-treatment prescriptions are not interchangeable just because the drug name is the same.
What to do next
- Take the prescribed tablet as directed. If you miss a dose, skip it and resume the usual schedule; do not double it.
- People who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken or crushed tablets. After contact, wash the area and contact a clinician.
- Tell the clinician interpreting a PSA test that you take finasteride because it can affect the result.
- Report sexual side effects, breast changes, or mood symptoms rather than assuming you must tolerate them.
When to contact your care team
Seek immediate help for new suicidal thoughts or a severe allergic reaction. Call your clinician promptly about new breast lumps, pain, or discharge. Review the complete drug information and discuss fertility or pregnancy-related concerns before treatment.
Put it into practice
For progress tracking, use comparable photos rather than checking several times a day. Keep the same lighting and angle and bring the dates to follow-up. Ask what time frame the prescriber expects before judging benefit and what would justify changing the plan earlier.
Notes for your next visit
