Medication use

Topical Minoxidil: Applying the Product You Actually Have

Topical minoxidil products differ in strength, applicator, and directions. A foam, a solution, and oral minoxidil are not the same treatment. Keep the package instructions with your product and confirm the intended area before starting.

What to do next

  1. Apply only to dry scalp as directed by your specific product. Avoid irritated or sunburned skin and other body areas.
  2. Measure or dispense the labeled amount; using more does not produce faster growth and can increase side effects.
  3. Wash your hands after application and avoid the eyes and other sensitive areas.
  4. For a missed application, follow the product instructions; do not use extra to catch up.

When to contact your care team

Contact a clinician promptly for chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, swelling, or unexplained weight gain. Discuss persistent scalp irritation before continuing. Keep the product away from children and pets, and seek urgent advice after accidental swallowing or exposure.

Put it into practice

If you switch brands or from solution to foam, read the new directions rather than transferring an old applicator measurement. At follow-up, bring the actual container or a label photo. Describe your application routine and any irritation so the clinician can distinguish a use problem from a treatment problem.
