New Injection Device or Label? Confirm Before Using It

A new box, device, or concentration can require new instructions even when the medication name is familiar. Do not transfer a dose measurement from an old syringe or pen to a different product. Ask the dispensing pharmacist to walk through the actual item you received.

What to do next

  1. Compare the medicine name, concentration, prescribed dose, device, and directions with your current order.
  2. Ask the pharmacist to explain the difference between the prescribed drug amount and the volume or device setting.
  3. Request product-specific training and written instructions before the first use of a changed device.
  4. If the label and instructions disagree, pause and contact the pharmacist or prescriber before injecting.

When to contact your care team

Do not calculate your own conversion between milligrams, milliliters, syringe markings, or pen clicks. If you may have given an incorrect dose, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 promptly; call 911 for severe symptoms. YourMD does not prescribe compounded GLP-1 products.

Put it into practice

A useful message is: “The device or concentration changed, but I only have instructions for my previous supply. Please confirm how this prescription should be used.” Keep the packaging until the question is resolved. A social-media video for a different product is not a substitute for that confirmation.

Notes for your next visit

Write these in your own notes or on a printed copy. Bring them to your follow-up.
