After your visit
Throat Swab Testing: What Happens After a Telehealth Visit
A video visit cannot reliably identify every cause of a sore throat. Your clinician may recommend a throat swab before deciding on treatment. Knowing where the test happens and how results return can prevent a plan from getting stuck between the visit and the laboratory.
What to do next
- Confirm whether a rapid strep test, culture, or another test was ordered and where it can be collected.
- Tell the person collecting the swab about medicines you have already taken, including antibiotics.
- Ask how and when you should receive the result. A rapid result and a culture may have different turnaround times.
- Review the result with your clinician. A negative rapid test sometimes needs follow-up testing, depending on the patient and situation.
When to contact your care team
Do not use leftover antibiotics while waiting. Seek urgent assessment for trouble swallowing fluids, worsening swelling, or dehydration. Breathing difficulty or inability to handle saliva needs emergency assessment rather than another routine video appointment.
Put it into practice
A useful question is: “If this test is negative but I am still unwell, what is our next step?” Keep the instructions for symptom relief separate from any instructions that depend on the test being positive.
Notes for your next visit
Write these in your own notes or on a printed copy. Bring them to your follow-up.
