Pregnancy planning belongs in your weight-management visit before you start trying to conceive. Weight-loss treatment and pregnancy have different nutrition goals. Bring the exact product name, formulation, last dose, and your intended timeline so your prescriber and pregnancy care team can make one coordinated plan.
What to do next
- Ask when to stop your specific medicine. For weight reduction, the U.S. Wegovy prescribing information says to stop at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Do not assume that interval applies to every weight-management medicine.
- For Zepbound, arrange an individualized preconception stop date. Its U.S. prescribing information directs discontinuation when pregnancy is recognized but does not give the same fixed two-month preconception instruction as Wegovy. Ask your prescriber to document your last dose and when to begin trying.
- Review contraception before changing treatment. Zepbound can reduce the effectiveness of oral hormonal contraceptives. Its label advises switching to a non-oral method or adding a barrier method for four weeks after starting and for four weeks after every dose increase. Ask how vomiting or diarrhea affects your contraceptive instructions too.
- If you also have diabetes, ask who will manage glucose during the transition. Bring recent readings and a complete medication list. Do not leave diabetes untreated or substitute another weight-loss product on your own.
- Agree on a pregnancy-focused nutrition and follow-up plan. Discuss prenatal care, supplements with your pregnancy clinician, eating enough when appetite changes, and how to respond to weight changes after stopping. Breastfeeding needs a separate, formulation-specific discussion.
- Write down who to call if your plans change. If pregnancy occurs unexpectedly, stop the medicine being used for weight reduction and contact your prescriber and pregnancy care team promptly. Ask about the product's pregnancy exposure registry; exposure alone cannot tell you the outcome.
When to contact your care team
A positive test or suspected pregnancy needs prompt clinical contact rather than waiting for your next refill. Seek urgent evaluation for severe abdominal or pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. Do not use another weight-loss medicine as a bridge during pregnancy.
Put it into practice
Send a concrete message: ‘I use this product and formulation, my last dose was on this date, and I hope to start trying in this month. What stop date, contraception plan, and follow-up do you recommend?’ Ask for the answer in your visit summary so both care teams see the same instructions.
